Free VoIP speed test
Check whether your internet is ready for VoIP calls. This free test measures latency, jitter, packet loss and speed, then estimates how many calls you can make at once and how clear they will sound.
Takes about 20 seconds. Close big downloads and video calls first for an accurate result.
Measured against Cloudflare's global speed-test network from your browser. Results are an estimate; your provider's own test may differ.
How to read your VoIP speed test results
| Measure | Good for VoIP | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Latency (ping) | Under 150 ms | The delay before your voice reaches the other side |
| Jitter | Under 30 ms | How much the delay varies; high jitter makes calls choppy |
| Packet loss | Under 1% | Voice data that never arrives; causes gaps |
| Upload and download | 100 kbps per call | Bandwidth each call needs in each direction |
| MOS score | 4.0 or higher | A 1-5 estimate of call quality (4.3+ is excellent) |
How to improve VoIP call quality
- Use a wired connection for desk phones and computers when you can.
- Turn on QoS (quality of service) in your router to prioritise voice traffic.
- Move closer to the router or add a mesh Wi-Fi system for better coverage.
- Pause big downloads and streaming during important calls.
- Restart your router if results suddenly drop.
- Test at different times: evenings can be busier on shared connections.
How this VoIP test works
The test runs entirely in your browser. It sends small requests to Cloudflare's global speed-test network to measure round-trip time and its variation (jitter), then downloads and uploads sample data to measure bandwidth. It estimates calls supported at roughly 100 kbps per call, using 80% of your slower direction, and converts latency, jitter and loss into a MOS-style score with a simplified E-model. Provider tests such as the RingCentral, Nextiva, 8x8 or Vonage VoIP tests measure similar values against their own servers, so results can differ slightly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good VoIP speed test result?
Latency under 150 ms, jitter under 30 ms, packet loss under 1% and at least 100 kbps per call in each direction. A MOS score of 4.0 or higher means clear calls.
How much bandwidth does a VoIP call use?
About 100 kbps in each direction with common codecs such as G.711, and less with efficient codecs such as Opus. Video calls need much more.
What is jitter in VoIP?
Jitter is how much the delay between voice packets changes. High jitter makes calls sound choppy or robotic. Under 30 ms is good.
What is a MOS score?
MOS (mean opinion score) rates call quality from 1 (bad) to 5 (excellent). Most VoIP calls top out around 4.4. Our test estimates MOS from your latency, jitter and packet loss.
Is this the same as the RingCentral or 8x8 VoIP test?
It measures the same things (latency, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth) but against Cloudflare's network instead of a provider's servers, so numbers may differ a little. Use a provider's own test too before you buy.
Why are my results different each time?
Internet conditions change with network traffic, Wi-Fi interference and other devices. Run the test a few times and at different hours for a fair picture.
